BLACK DOG FARM The Harlows – Rob and Brenda, and the next generation Ian
and Erika – run Black Dog Farm between Enchanted Forest and Mt. Baker Roads.
They have been farming since 1985 on 20 acres: about eight acres pasture; five
acres orchard and five acres agricultural gardens. The Harlows’ farming venture started when
they bought the farm property around 1980, after 20 years of neglect. Many farm
buildings, pasture and orchards were overgrown with eight-foot high scotch
broom. Previously, it had been an orchard and vegetable farm in the 1920s, and
then Carson’s chicken farm until the 1960s.
Black Dog Farm is one of Farm to Cafeteria's prime providers of fresh, organic produce and huge supporter of our program.
MAPLE ROCK FARM Maple Rock Farm has been faithfully providing local organic produce to the public school cafeteria since the beginning. John Steward, owner, also welcomes our students to his lovely Orcas farm where he takes them into gardens of vegetables where they pluck, wash and taste fresh radishes, lettuces of all kinds, and carrots. They also get a chance to gather eggs, see how seedlings are grown in greenhouses, watch pigs romp in a tub, hop a tractor and feel free. For some, this is the first time they have ever been to a farm, seen chickens or pigs or tasted food right out of the ground. When the day is done, he treats them to fresh organic pizza from his outdoor stone oven and gives them a down-to-Earth talk about life on the farm and the importance of eating good, fresh food.
MORNING STAR FARM A small family farm located on Orcas Island, which pride itself on hand scale methods for providing a wide range of fruits, berries, herbs and vegetables to our public school and communiity. All produce stays on Island and is sold at the Orcas Island Farmers Market, through our CSA program, to local restaurants and the public school. Morning Star Farm also offers an internship program starting in mid-March through mid to late October, and encourages educational opportunities on our farm through school-based field trips and farm-based workshops.
TAPROOT FARM Taproot's owner, Sarah Ross, and her daughter Makala Forster are the reason the Farm to Cafeteria Program exists today. In 2005, Makala made a presentation to the school board for the program. It was approved and, after a few years of finding its legs, has grown into a flourishing program benefiting every K-12 student in the Orcas Island Public School system.
RED RABBIT FARM Located near Westsound, Bruce and Christina Orchid have cultivated their beautiful farm into a place of bountiful "hospitality without pretense or puffery." Willingly and generously contributing not only products but time, training and energy toward our Farm to Cafeteria Program.
