OUR MISSION:

To nurture a strong Farm-to-Cafeteria Program incorporating local organic food sources, the community and the public school cafeteria; to provide education/curriculum about farming and sustainability through “Farm to Classroom,” and maintain a solid base upon which the Orcas Island Farm-to-Cafeteria Program can continue to grow, prosper and provide good health and nutritional experiences for our youth.

OUR PROGRAM:

Our Program teaches about nutrition, food differences, how to eat proper foods for healthy bodies, see how food is grown, visit farms and meet farmers, learn to cook...these are all aspects of an effective Farm to Cafeteria Program.  They are the aspects we are binding together and disseminating through our classrooms, the school garden, the school cafeteria, the community and the farms.

K-8 Farm to Classroom ties together the garden, the farm, the classroom, the community and the cafeteria and provides the glue that holds the program together. Just improving the school lunch will not a perfect program make.  The kids have to realize what good food is and how much better for their bodies it will be for the rest of their lives.  Learn more...

Our school garden is a place to nourish the body and challenge the mind.   Our garden, located on our K-12 campus, is rapidly fulfilling even more...it is becoming an invaluable classroom for students of all ages in art, science, biology, architecture, agriculture, math, to name just a few.  Learn more...

Our school cafeteria prepares scratch-cooked meals every day.  Our cafeteria staff of just 3 puts out an average of almost 200 breakfasts and 300 lunches for our K through 12 public school kids - without fail, fresh made breads and delicious entrees cooked from scratch and with a smile.  Learn more...

A big reason why our program is so successful is because we have some of the best farms on Earth here on Orcas Island.  Our Island Farms grow and harvest some of best foods available anywhere, and our public school kids are able to reap the benefit of good, healthy food every day in our school cafeteria.  We are so grateful for our Island Farms: Black Dog Farm, Morning Star Farm, Maple Rock Farm, Red Rabbit Farm, Coffelt Farm, Jones Family Farm (Lopez island), Taproot Farm, Blue Moon, Orcas Farm, Doe Bay Garden.
